Ely residents demand more affordable homes

“East Cambs Council is shirking its responsibilities to local people,” says Kevin Wilkins of Market Street. “We badly need many more homes that local residents can afford to buy or rent.”

Too many people have to leave this area to find a home they can afford, say the Lib Dems.

The council can require developers to build cheaper homes, but the Conservative Council is hardly using its powers. Many councils
insist that about 1 in 3 new homes are affordable. But here it has been below 1 in 10 in recent years.

“Prices in Ely have risen a lot, but wages haven’t. The Council must act so that young people aren’t forced away,” said Kevin Wilkins.
