CLEAN UP OUR RIVER!

Cllr Kathrin Holtzmann (Lib Dem, Ely East) has kicked off a campaign to end the emptying of ‘sea toilets’ into the River Great Ouse which flows through Ely.

Sea toilets discharge human waste from boats directly into the river. This practice is permitted by regulation on all inland waterways unless specifically banned.

Cllr Holtzmann is calling on the Environment Agency, which controls the Great Ouse, to take the necessary steps to achieve a ban on this practice locally. 

Cllr Holtzmann’s proposal to write to the Environment Agency to request this ban was debated by East Cambridgeshire District Council, which agreed it unanimously at its meeting on Thursday 17 October.
