Lib Dem plan to boost city centre

Edge of town sites are hurting the City Centre

“An attractive city centre like ours could flourish if given the right help,” said city centre resident Matt Downey in front of one of
the empty shops.

Ely City Centre needs a new development plan, say the local Lib Dems.

Much of the Conservatives’ plan is wildly out of date given the growth of online shopping.

The centre is also under threat from the policies of the current council which has favoured edge-of-town sites, a policy discouraged by the government for more than 20 years.

“Ely has some excellent specialist shops and they can form the basis on which the city centre’s future can be built,” said Alison Whelan.
