20MPH for Ely
Local Liberal Democrats were out in Ely Market Square last week and will be again this week, letting residents know about the plans for a 20MPH limit across the whole of Ely.
The consultation on the proposal closes on Thursday 21 September. The consultation documents are available to view here.
Liberal Democrats are backing the 20MPH proposal, which received unanimous support from the City of Ely Council. They believe that lower speeds would make Ely a safer and healthier place to live.
"We know that lower speeds mean fewer collisions and fewer fatalities," says Ely South county councillor Piers Coutts. "We also know that 20MPH zones improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, and can lead to healthier lifestyles with more walking and cycling."
Ely North county councillor Alison Whelan adds: "We're not suggesting that a 20MPH speed limit will solve all of Ely's traffic problems, but it's a step in the right direction. It will make our streets safer for everyone, from pedestrians and cyclists to children playing in the street."
